Our Mission

The Virginia Tech Language and Culture Institute (VTLCI) provides language-related programs and services for academic and professional development. Through its work, VTLCI contributes to the university's diversity and intellectual capacity by helping to attract the best and brightest international students, scholars and professionals to our community. Part of the university's Outreach and International Affairs division, VTLCI has locations in Blacksburg at the main Virginia Tech campus and in the National Capital Region at the university’s Northern Virginia Center. The institute hosts over 500 students per year from more than 30 countries spanning the globe, served by 50 professional faculty, instructors and staff.

Intensive English English Language Programming
The Intensive English course series provides full-time language training to international students seeking admission to U.S. universities. Instruction is offered from beginning through advanced proficiency levels, and is supplemented by self-paced, interactive computer-assisted training. This program serves an average 300 - 400 students per semester at the institute's two locations.
Degree Preparation Degree Preparation
The institute offers courses in academic and professional writing for admitted Virginia Tech international students. Provided in cooperation with the Virginia Tech Graduate School and taken in students' first semester at Virginia Tech, these courses ensure readiness for the expectations and rigor of graduate-level writing.
Capacity Building Capacity-building Initiatives
The VTLCI maintains working partnerships with universities in Chile, China and Haiti to build capacity at these institutions for English language training. Activities include sourcing of instructors, curriculum development, distance language training and teacher training.
Fulbright Programs Fulbright Programs
