The Virginia Tech Language and Culture Institute (LCI) provides language-related programs and services for academic and professional development. Through its work, the LCI contributes to the university's diversity and intellectual capacity by helping to attract the best and brightest international students, scholars, and professionals to our community. Part of Virginia Tech Outreach and International Affairs, the LCI has locations in Blacksburg at the main Virginia Tech campus and in the National Capital Region in Fairfax. The institute hosts over 500 students per year from more than 30 countries spanning the globe, served by 75 professional faculty, instructors, and staff.
|Conditional Admission Program
The conditional admission program is designed to recruit promising undergraduate international students to Virginia Tech. Prospective students who meet regular admission requirements except English language may apply for conditional admission through the LCI. See Terms and Conditions for more information.
|English Language Programming
The Intensive English course series provides full-time language training to international students seeking admission to U.S. universities. Instruction is offered from beginning through advanced proficiency levels and is supplemented by self-paced, interactive computer-assisted training. This program serves 300 to 400 students per semester at the institute's two locations.
The LCI offers courses in academic and professional writing for admitted Virginia Tech international students. Provided in cooperation with the Virginia Tech Graduate School and taken in students' first semester at Virginia Tech, these courses ensure readiness for the expectations and rigor of graduate-level writing.
The LCI maintains working partnerships with universities in Chile, China, and Haiti to build capacity at these institutions for English language training. Activities include sourcing of instructors, curriculum development, distance language training, and teacher training.
In the last several years the LCI has hosted more than 70 Fulbright-sponsored students from over 50 countries throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Middle East. These programs are provided in partnership with the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education.
|Foreign Language Training
Foreign language conversation courses for Virginia Tech faculty and staff are organized by the LCI in cooperation with the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Courses are offered in the fall and spring semesters and include Arabic, Chinese (standard Mandarin), Spanish, Italian, German, and French.
The LCI supports the efforts of EducationUSA, a network of more than 400 advising centers in 170 countries promoting study at U.S. colleges and universities. EducationUSA is a part of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
The LCI is a member of the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education, a strategic services organization that conducts high level research and disseminates emerging trends, best practices, policy frameworks, and assessment and quality assurance information relevant to cross-border higher education program delivery across the globe.
