The Virginia Tech main campus is situated in Southwest Virginia’s picturesque New River Valley in the town of Blacksburg. Set between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, Blacksburg offers naturally beautiful views, unique stores, art galleries, and restaurants.
Founded in 1872, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, also known as Virginia Tech, is a comprehensive, innovative research university with the largest full-time student population in Virginia. The 1050-hectare campus includes 125 buildings and is home to more than 28,000 students. The university’s Gothic, gray limestone architecture gives the campus a character unique to Virginia Tech.
The university community is set in Blacksburg, a small town close to scenic and historic
Virginia tourist attractions. Here international students become familiar with many practical
aspects of daily life and culture in the United States: shopping, enjoying golf, tennis,
hiking, and canoeing, attending plays and concerts, and socializing. General information
about Blacksburg can be found on the
Student Life section
of Virginia Tech's Web site, and on
the Blacksburg Electronic Village.
