The Virginia Tech Language and Culture Institute (VTLCI) is currently seeking instructors for its Intensive English course series at the Main Campus location. Those interested are encouraged to apply as soon as possible for the term beginning October 19, 2009. Continuing need is anticipated for terms beginning January 11 and March 15, 2010.
VTLCI employs English and foreign language instructors at both the main Virginia Tech campus and Northern Virginia Center.
Instructors in the VTLCI English Language Program are required to hold a Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) or a related field. Foreign language instructors must hold a Bachelor's or the equivalent (Masters preferred) in the target foreign language, linguistics or a related field.
Responsibilities
- Planning, teaching and evaluating assigned classes in accordance course curricula
- Planning and leading field trips
- Maintaining students' class records
- Fulfilling committee and administrative duties as required and/or requested
- Participating in professional development activities
Qualifications
- Experience teaching the target language in a classroom setting
- If foreign language, near-native fluency in the target language and in English
- Demonstrated ability to use the latest technology and teaching techniques
- International work experience is desirable but not required

Student aids assist in a variety of ways to help VTLCI international students adjust to their new surroundings in the U.S. and to lead or accompany students in area activities.
Responsibilities
- Assisting International students with the orientation process to include helping students to obtain VT ID cards shopping opening bank accounts and understanding residence hall rules
- Publicizing the VT-ENGAGE Conversation Partner Program
- Coordinating and participating in after-school conversation and social activities
- International work experience is desirable but not required
- Coordinating and participating in after-school conversation activities
- Driving state vehicles to certain events
- Assisting in the VTLCI office as needed
Student Services Aides must have a warm outgoing personality, patience, a strong work ethic and an interest in working with international students who may not speak English well. A valid driver's license and good driving record are required.
